Kasubi Tombs restoration - SMS drive launched

    The BUGANDA kingdom has launched a fundraising drive dubbed “Ssaagala Agalamidde” (no slumber) in which the public will contribute via SMS to raise the shs10b for the reconstruction of the Kasubi tombs.

    This four months campaign requires a person to send a text message with the word ‘Masiro’ to 8885. Each SMS will cost shs. 500, which will go to the treasury meant to facilitate the restoration of Kasubi heritage.

    Famous tourists attraction site recording more than 50,000 visitors a year.

    Located in Kampala, Central region under the ministry of tourism, Buganda government.

    Launching the drive at the Imperial Royale Hotel in Kampala, Katikkiro J.B. Walusimbi, said Shs. 513m had been raised in the last seven months towards the restoration of the tombs, which were destroyed in an inferno on March 16, this year. He added that the Shs. 10b collections is meant to also cover the refurbishing of 31 other dilapidated cultural sites and tombs, most of which are in Wakiso district (Central region).

    The Miniter for Tourism, Trade and Industry Hon. Kahinda Otafiire said the Government is committed to the restoration of the tombs, adding that it would contribute twice the amount of money which will be raised towards rebuilding the tombs.
