The Parliament of Uganda will host the 126th Inter Parliamentary Union (IPU) Assembly from March 31st to April 4th 2012 in Kampala.
The IPU is the international organization of Parliaments established in 1889. The Union is the focal point for world-wide parliamentary dialogue and works for peace and co-operation among people and for the firm establishment of representation of democracy.
The Speaker of Parliament Rt. Hon. Rebecca Kadaga announced October 18, in Bern, Switzerland that the Uganda Parliament was ready to receive the over 1500 delegates from 160 countries.
“We were ready in 2009. We are ready now and even if they said the conference is next week, we can swing into action,” Kadaga stated.
The IPU Governing Council chose Uganda to play host to the international conference in 2009 in Geneva. Uganda shrugged off competition from several European countries which too wanted to host the event.
Hon Kadaga, who was also elected to the IPU Executive Committee, said it had been a long wait for Uganda. Uganda has been a committed member of IPU, attending all meetings and participating in its activities. The opening ceremony of the 126th IPU assembly will be Speke Common Wealth Resort, Munyonyo while the subsequent meetings will be held at the Serena and Imperial Royale Hotels.
Visiting delegates to Kampala can be assured of enjoying the country’s unmatched hospitality, a wealth of cultural heritage, friendly climatic conditions and many other great tourist attractions. The Speaker said delegates will savor the Pearl of Africa’s tourist attractions and promised to encourage the delegates to spend their Easter holidays in Uganda.
