Uganda to promote tourism at Rio+20 Summit

  • Ugandais set to showcase its tourism potential at the forthcoming UN environmental  conference dubbed Rio+20 due to take place in Brazil’s Capital Rio De Janeiro in June this year.

    The Executive Director National Environmental Management Authority Dr.Tom Okurut said that as UN member states focus on building a green
    economy to achieve sustainable developmentUganda is to showcase its tourism potential to attract more Tourism revenues.

    Okurut says that Uganda having been selected to represent Africa on the Rio+20 negotiation teams will take special interest in drawing a
    strategic framework that will implement efforts of building a green economy to alleviate poverty.

    He said developing countries can ensure sustainable development if they embrace the principle of placing environmental issues at the centre of all developments.

    He further reported Uganda will use the Sideline works in Rio de Janeiro to showcase her organic Agriculture to attract more markets on the international level.

    The Rio+20 UN conference is also geared to assess the progress in environmental protection and renew political commitment since Rio 1992.

    The conference starting on the 15th of June to 22nd of June will also discuss issues regarding creation of Green Jobs, Energy sources, food security, water and disasters.
